COVID Vaccine Program Changes

by | Oct 1, 2026 | News

As of 1 October 2026, COVID vaccines have moved from the standalone National COVID-19 Vaccine Program (NCVP) to the National Immunisation Program – the same well-established program used for other nationally funded vaccines in Australia.

COVID is now considered endemic in Australia (a disease that’s normally present at a steady, expected level) and the vaccination program has been refined to focus protection on those at highest risk of severe illness.

Who Remains Eligible for a Free COVID Vaccine?

  • All adults aged 75 and over (one dose every 6 months)
  • Adults aged 65–74 (one dose every 12 months)
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50–74 (one dose every 12 months)
  • Adults aged 18 and over with severe immunocompromise (one dose every 12 months)

If you don’t fall into one of these groups, you can still choose to receive the vaccine privately at your own cost.
