Winter brings with it a drop in humidity, which can dehydrate our bodies. We see a lot of patients complaining about dry, itchy skin fearing the worst.

Much of the time there’s nothing to worry about. It just takes a little extra effort to care for your winter skin. Here are some tips:

  • Moisturise daily

Find a moisturiser that suits your skin. You may want to use one kind for your face and another for your body.

  • Take lukewarm showers

As lovely as it is to linger in a hot shower on a winter’s morning, the heat has a dehydrating effect. Your skin will thank you for turning the temperature down a notch.

  • Use less soap

Soap dries out your skin like crazy. Use sparingly during winter. Avoid extreme lathering and soaking with bath bombs.

  • Keep up the fluids

Though it may seem less necessary when it’s cold, it’s vital to stay hydrated during winter. Water is best. Soft drinks, coffee and booze are proven to dehydrate your body.

Of course, if the above tips don’t get you results and your symptoms persist, please book an appointment to see your GP.
