We now have an ongoing supply of the orally ingested typhoid vaccine. This vaccine lasts for five years compared to three years for the injectable version. It’s also ideal for travellers who aren’t fond of needles.
Typhoid is a potentially fatal disease caused by Salmonella Typhi bacteria – present in contaminated food and water. High-risk regions include Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and South America.
The oral typhoid vaccine costs $65.00, the same as the injectable version, and needs to be started at least two weeks before you travel. The dosage involves taking four capsules over seven days.
The vaccine isn’t suitable for certain people, including kids under six years old, pregnant women, and people immuno-compromised or on antibiotics. It’s safe to take at the same time as other vaccines.
