Eligible people can now get a government-funded respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine at Doctors of South Melbourne.

Under the National Immunisation Program, eligibility is extended to the following people:

  • Adults aged 75 years and older
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults aged 60 years and over
  • Women who are 28-36 weeks pregnant (prior to 37 weeks)
  • Until 30 September 2026, babies and infants who meet specific eligibility criteria (please speak with your GP about this option)

RSV is a common and highly contagious virus that infects the airways and lungs.

RSV spreads between people through tiny water droplets produced while talking, coughing, and sneezing. It can be lethal, especially for babies and older people.

Symptoms are typical of respiratory illnesses and include a runny nose, coughs and sneezes, wheezing, and fever. The virus can spread to the lower respiratory tract, putting people at risk of pneumonia and bronchiolitis.

The vaccine provides protection by reducing the risk of severe illness, hospitalisation, and lasting complications common with RSV infection.

You can book a 15-minute ‘Adult Immunisation’ appointment online with our practice nurse or call us on (03) 8579 6838.

Visit the Department of Health and Aged Care website for more information about RSV immunisations.

* Due to recent Medicare rule changes, we now charge a $34 nurse fee to administer vaccines, including those funded through the National Immunisation Program.
